Archaeological
Field Trips
For years schools within a 60 mile radius of Carter Caves State Park have sent school field trips to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, and tour lighted cave systems in the park.
This year the Museum offers groups an additional attraction which should be both fun and educational.

The Museum sits on land once used by Native Americans as a camp site and work area. Debris from hundreds of years of occupation litters a cliff shelter only 50 yards from our parking lot.
Our guide will present a brief history of the major cultures that rose and fell in the Ohio Valley. A hand-out will be available for further study. The guide will discuss basic Archeological tools and techniques and students will then be allowed to work as a team to excavate an area of the site. All equipment is supplied. Water and rest rooms are nearby, and much of this site is wheel chair accessible.

Worked flint and pottery shards are usually encountered, but complete arrowheads are not uncommon. We can provide a display frame for your better pieces, and this can be taken home as a memento of the trip.

We have a great deal of flexibility as to the amount of time available for activities. We can offer marshmallows over a campfire, or complete lunches to your group. Contact us with your needs. We can put together an affordable package for you school or family group.
We carefully conform to all State and Federal laws in the activities at this site.
